NXTLOG Holiday Building Challenge

'Tis the season to be building Fa la la la la la la la la

Robots to help with holiday gilding Fa la la la la la la la la

Put your project up on NXTLOG… Fa la la la la la la la la

Wow! A cool robotic yule log Fa la la la la la la la la

The holiday season is here and we want you to design a Holiday NXTbot! Your robot must represent a seasonal holiday.

(Thanksgiving, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Christmas, Eid-el-Fitr, Diwali, and more…). You can

make a NXT Turkey, a timely ornament, a Kwanzaa kinara, a dreidel, or even a robotic gift

wrapper. The ideas are endless so use your creative imagination to make a fun holiday bot!

There's no limit on amount of LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT sensors, motors, NXT

programmable bricks, HiTechnic sensors, or Bluetooth communication you can use on your

MINDSTORMS NXT Holiday Bot. You have until Friday December 31, 2008 to

enter your robot.

See this NXTLOG to enter Holiday Building Challenge This software is

adequate for basic programming, such as driving motors, incorporating sensor inputs,

doing calculations, and learning simplified programming structures and flow control.

Here are some advantages and disadvantages of using version 1.0 of this software:

Pros: * NXT-G is easy to install on Windows XP and Vista machines, and Macintosh is also supported.

* NXT-G can transfer data via Bluetooth or included USB cable.

* NXT-G provides an easy to use, drag and drop, graphical environment

. * The graphics include data wires that show data flow from block to block

. Cons: * NXT programs can be much larger than identical programs developed with

a third party programming language (e.g. 12 kiB versus 2 kiB).

* Programs take substantially longer to load than third party programs.

* When creating large programs, NXT-G tends to crash and lose unsaved data.

* NXT-G software usually runs sluggishly, even on powerful PCs.

Most of these issues have been addressed in the recently-released

NXT-G v1.1 version of the software.

Name: Alpha Rex Robot

Type: Humanoid

What this robot can do: Alpha Rex performs tasks that only the most

sophisticated robots can do... Walk on two legs like a real person!

With built in rotation sensors on the two Servo Motors powering his legs,

and an Ultrasonic Sensor enabling Alpha Rex to see, you can program

Alpha Rex to go where you want with precision

! He Sees! (With an Ultrasonic Sensor)

He Hears! (With a Sound Sensor)

He Talks! (With a built-in Speaker on the NXT brick

and sounds from the NXT Software)

He Walks! (With two Servo Motors)

He Feels! (With Touch and Light Sensors) See how easy it is to program

AlphaRex to walk and have his "Heart Beat" on the NXT Display!

This simple program makes use of simultaneous tasks on two Sequence Beams

. Alpha Rex’s heart beats on one task, while his legs are powered to

move on the other.MINDSTORMS NXT Happy Building!
